The Troubles With Building ‘China’s GE’
DEYANG, China—In this verdant city deep inside China, one of the country’s oldest state-owned companies has built a 10-story-high machine that Chinese leaders hope will help it take on Boeing , the U.S. Air Force and even the U.S. space program.
The mammoth closed-die hydraulic press forge—which went into operation last year—is the largest in the world. It makes highly resilient components—such as aircraft landing gear—from titanium and metal alloys that are pressed into shape by its 80,000 tons of force.
Long term, China sees it as part of an effort to curb its dependence on foreign firms to meet the country’s strategic goals in aerospace, technology and other important areas.

Police angry at 'hands up' gesture by St. Louis Rams players
(CNN) -- A group representing police in St. Louis says it's infuriated after five St. Louis Rams players raised their hands Sunday in solidarity with protesters upset at Michael Brown's death.
The St. Louis Police Officers Association says it's "profoundly disappointed" with those football players who sent a silent but strong message before they took the field Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin, Jared Cook, Chris Givens and Kenny Britt walked onto the field and raised their palms in the air, demonstrating the "hands up, don't shoot" gesture that protesters in Ferguson have been using for months.
Some say that Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, had his arms up when a white police officer, Darren Wilson, shot him to death August 9 in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb. Wilson and others say Brown was not trying to surrender and in fact was attacking Wilson.

A grand jury decided last week not to indict Wilson, leading to protests nationwide.
The football players' action sparked widespread reaction across social media. Some drew parallels between what the Rams players did and the black power salute by two black Olympians from the United States at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

Iraq's army weakened from within by 50,000 'ghost' soldiers
(CNN) -- In its fight against Islamist terror militia ISIS, the Iraqi army may be weakened from within by corrupt soldiers not showing for duty -- 50,000 of them. Maybe more.
The country's Prime Minister has found as many so-called "ghost" soldiers, he told Parliament on Sunday.
"Ghost" soldiers are members of the armed forces, who pay off their commanders with a portion of their salaries, so they don't have to man their posts.

"Only by checking paperwork, I managed during this month to eliminate 50,000 ghost soldiers in four Iraqi army divisions," Haider al-Abadi said.
Lawmakers erupted in shouts at his announcement.
Investigators are looking for additional cases, and al-Abadi expects many more to turn up.
"I feel sad that all that time we were paying salaries, and we don't have money, while other soldiers are fighting and getting killed, and some soldiers are getting paid without appearing," he said.
The Prime Minister vowed to punish those responsible.
ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, has captured and held broad swaths of territory in Iraq's north and west.
Iraqi military forces have often appeared in disarray while doing battle against the extremists.
